Ice and mixed climbing long weekend at the Felbertauern up to whatever grade you want to achieve, the sky is the limit. On top of it we choose a perfect base camp with lodging at the cozy Matreier Tauernhaus right in the center of the goods. This area is historically one of the most consistent ice climbing destinations in the alps. Due to its high geographic setting close to the divide, we can choose either the north or the south side of Europes biggest range, connected by the convenient 6km long Felbertauerntunnel. The Ice Park Osttirol is right out the front door and there are many single and multi pitch options within a 15min car ride. Sounds too good to be true, better check it out.
Like always, below’s itinerary is just a glimpse of how the trip could look like, your guide will decide amongst the many options of the region, depending on conditions.
day 1:travel to the Matreier Tauernhaus, where you will meet your guide over dinner for a briefing and equipment check at 6p.m.
day 2: for starters we usually climb the Steinwandfall, 120m of grade WI5/+, with a steep half hour approach. For keeners we can still climb more ice and mixed routes at the near by Ice Park and do some technique training to fine tune the art of hard ice and mixed climbing.
day 3: Now we know each other a little bit better we can choose countless big objectives of the region. Your guide you will tell you about all the options given the conditions, either long climbs with an ‘alpinish’ feeling, or shorter and spicy. We will make sure you find the best objectives for your abilities and desires.
day 4: As a highlight of the trip we usually drive through the Felbertauerntunnel and check out the exciting climbs on Salzburg side of the “hole”. They are popular due to the short approaches, offering steep ice and mixed pitches. Lots of options with hard ice to grade WI6 and awesome mixed lines with mostly traditional gear too. Since the popularity of some climbs we choose a route with nobody on it. If you are keen, we can climb a second route to make sure that you will remember this long weekend with burning forearms for a few more days.
