With a height of 3.666 m the Grossvenediger is not only Austria’s fourth highest mountain but also one of the most impressive glacier summits of the Eastern Alps. With his radial arranged ridges he forms a broad and extraordinary top of snow and ice. Due to his exposed position you can even see the summit of Ortler if the weather is good. The ascent is possible in summer and winter (with skis).
Starting point: The tour starts from Johannishütte (2.121m); you reach the Johannishütte either by walking from Hinterbichl (1.331m) or taking the Venedigertaxi which we are happy to organize for you. From the Johannishütte a well-marked path leads to the Defreggerhaus (ca. 2.5 hours). You can easily do this on your own.
Meeting point with mountain guide: You will meet your mountain guide at Defreggerhaus (2.963m) around 19:00. He will give you a short description of the tour and check the equipment. The next morning you start very early (ca. 06:00). A hiking path leads to the place where you rope up. From there you will walk over the glacier in direction to the Rainertörl (3.422m) and continue to the summit. This will take about 3.5 hours. The descent follows the same route as the ascent.
Good physical shape and experience with long hiking tours. No glacier experience is needed.
